The Gallery of Thomas Clements Self taught artist Thomas Clements hails from Walla Walla, Washington, where he attended school, moving to Sandpoint, Idaho at the age of 21. A personal friend, my husband and I were delighted last summer to bid and win one of Tom's first paintings done twenty years ago that had turned up at an estate auction. No, we aren't showing it to you, we've already had people try to purchase it off our walls! Coming from a rural area, that did not offer the exposure to museums and art communities that large metropolitan areas have, Tom learned by studying the works of master artists. After moving to Idaho his art became an "obsession" according to Tom. Shying away from juried shows and the politics of the art world, Tom prefers to promote his art quietly, with many of his paintings being sold into private collections and now through his website. He paints to learn as much about art as he can. Discovering something new or at least never experienced is what holds his interest in painting. Quoting Tom: "I can tolerate repetition to a limited degree for a period of time, but repetition offers only a narrow range of possibilities to learn within. Sometimes repetition can be conductive to growth, but often times it is an unnecessary constriction impeding growth. It can easily lead to the production of lifeless images." Viewing the differences of the paintings I have shown here, The Inlet, Spanish Town and Guardian of the Flower, you can easily see that Tom's style is unique with each painting, and certainly not repetitious.
